I thought that today's news would have pushed up volume?
Well, there's no easy way to answer that question. Today's news is good to be sure but to be honest with you, the only thing it is, is an insurance policy that someone will be there to buy their cobalt should they not be able to secure an OEM agreement like Trent wanted in the first place.
There are a few question marks that need to be crossed out before that cloud of risk goes away, and they are 1) securing the loan agreement and 2) getting their permit amendments for the refinery so they can actually begin the expansion process. I expect that with today's news, we should be seeing the loan agreement finalized very soon, and then it will garner more attention from people.
I think that there are people (and institutions) who might be watching this company who have lower or tighter risk tolerances, who want to get in on the fun but are waiting for Trent to put more things on the table before they commit.
I might be a hopeful fool, but I believe that Trent will deliver and that the market will follow, but we just need to have a little more patience. This is not a stock to buy for people hoping to make a quick turnaround.
But to answer your question about the cobalt, I think that people believe that the cobalt content of batteries will be eliminated in short order. But reliable and safe cobalt-free batteries are still a ways off. Not to mention that QuantumScape's new solid-state battery technology still also uses cobalt. It is said that their model should work with any cathode type but they have been testing their proof-of-concept with the typical NMC-811 cathodes. That's about the extent of my knowledge on batteries though. I'm a finance and risk guy, not a chemist lol.
