Jun 17, 2021
Kiewit Bonatti TMEP Partnership is constructing Spread 5B – the portion of pipeline construction in the Coquihalla–Hope region – of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. This includes 85 kilometres of the pipeline route from the Coquihalla Summit area to Bridal Veil Falls. It features exceptional terrain and engineering challenges. We recently connected with Kiewit Bonatti to learn more about its plans for pipeline construction in the region.

Tell us a bit about your companies' experience with energy infrastructure construction.

Kiewit and Bonatti bring extensive experience in energy infrastructure construction. Both companies have worked on complex and challenging projects in mountainous terrain. Notable projects include the Sea-to-Sky Highway and Port Mann Bridge in British Columbia.

The Sea to Sky Highway between Horseshoe Bay and Whistler, BC.
What’s your process for hiring the construction crews and related workers for the Project?

Kiewit Bonatti will engage with local and Indigenous communities to provide employment and subcontract opportunities. We encourage anyone interested in joining our team to email their resume to tradesjobs@kiewit.com. Our goal is to hire a diverse workforce and ensure the local community benefits from the Project.

Do you have any particular engineering challenges that are unique or will require innovative solutions?

Spread 5B includes challenging mountainous sections with steep slopes that will require specialized equipment, engineering, and procedures to safely work under these conditions. Kiewit Bonatti has also identified multiple technical challenge areas in Spread 5B for which constructability solutions are currently being developed. These solutions will require additional field geotechnical investigation and engineering support to utilize the best methodology, alignment design and mitigation measures. A significant number of trenchless crossings are needed due to geotechnical challenges, reduced workspace and to minimize interaction with existing infrastructures.

Tell us about your mission statement and core values.

Our core values are People, Integrity, Excellence and Stewardship. These principles guide our work and drive the right decisions for our company, our employees, clients, partners, and the communities in which we work.

Can you tell us about your commitments to worker and public safety, and environmental protection?

Nothing is more important than safety. Kiewit Bonatti are committed to ensuring the highest level of safety on the Project, with programs that exceed regulatory standards. We seek continuous improvement and provide extensive on the job training so that our employees are prepared for the task at hand. Kiewit Bonatti also understands the Expansion Project’s commitment to environmental protection and will serve as a responsible steward of the environment.
