As sort of an "old China hand," I'd like to point out that that country has advanced from being quite backward, even through the Mao times, to being among the most important economies in the world today. I concur.
What builds a great Empire (whether Culture, political, moral, or economic) is a voluntary membership to the Pax - not through threats and coercion. Others must want to voluntarily partake in the growing phenomenon. And share in the prosperity.
To threaten others that may suspect that your emergent power is an existential threat to them, will surely be met with resistance.
Resistance to the death is justified.
As for the CCP, they need to understand that it is considered reasonable to pursue their complete annihilation if they choose to be belligerent. And that their "Exceptional Theory" works flawlessly when turned against them as well.
