The other aspect is that coal runs in seams and as I understand it here, once you are into gold bearing ore you are into it consistently. A 50 m overburden is nothing. They can run up to 200m or more..... I think with lower grade spread out over such a large area open pit would be pretty much the only option. The infrastructure to do this as an underground to me would not be feasible at all....
Imagine Seabridge's tunnel. But hundreds of times wider and deeper. How do you support that?
