The media is a huge catalyst in influencing many people and planting seeds of fear to manipulate their actions and behaviours. Short sellers for example thrive in times of paranoia and fear by being proactive and creating a fearful atmosphere and spreading their propaganda and or capitalizing on an existing one. Stock prices can be manipulated to squeeze out the weak hands (people using margin/leverage to trade or people who fall prey to the media noise). Some institutional buyers are savvy enough to sacrifice 100,000 shares strategically placed at opportune times at a loss to trigger stop losses placed by retail investors and then proceed to buy millions when the other retail investors get scared and start stampeding to the exit. Jim Cramer gives an interesting testimony on how hedge funds take advantage of the regular retail investor:

Hi Yas, thanks for the feedback and the link to Youtube. I hear where you are coming from but I believe that there is more to it. I just think that something sinister is driving the stock price. One thing that is clear to me is that the company's fundametals are not driving the stock prtce.
I hold a fair amount of shares. I will keep my postion until proven right. Cheers
