1. I stand by the comment that it's generous to suggest that the "F**k Trudeau" convoy was supported by even 5% of all truckers. CTV (which leans Conservative) interviewed several other trucking organizations and a number of individual truckers 3.5 weeks ago for a story on January 28.
Link. Key quote:
Dennis Levesque of London, Ont. has been a trucker for eight years. He calls the convoy "an embarrassment for the industry" and says the participants only represent a "tiny, tiny proportion of drivers." 2. Regarding masks on kids and teachers. You and I live in different universes. 9 out of 10 parents I know want their kids' teachers to be vaccinated, and I'm always amazed and a bit shocked by those who either don't care or are actively opposed. It's a projection of ideology onto the schoolkids themselves to say they're being seriously harmed by mask-wearing.
3. Yes we CAN run our country according to polls -- especially if the polls are straightforward reflections of the will of the great majority. Elections are polls. Democracies operate according to polls taken on representation and platforms every few years. In the meantime, governments who operate against the will of the people (as measured by polls) very quickly find themselves in deep trouble. The governments which are most in trouble in Canada are the ones that didn't take Covid seriously enough, as when Jason Kenney in Alberta watched his popularity slip to the lowest level of all Premiers last summer and autumn.
4. No one is welcome in my house if they're unvaccinated. That includes everyone in our beloved extended family over 12 years of age. All the kids in the family between 5 and 12 have now been double vaccinated. The tradespeople we've had in our house have all been masked. I'm hoping all that changes in the next couple of months, and we can relax all the restrictions again.
In the meantime, I'm not excessively afraid, but I'm not stupid either. Most of all I do not relish the idea of being the person who sends an immuno-compromised (or asthmatic, overweight, over 70 years old, etc.) family member or friend to the ICU or the morgue because I personally valued my freedom more highly than their lives.
