1. On scientific reporting, all good scientists and reporters of science (whether the reporters are scientists, doctors, or journalists) are aware of limitations and changes regarding best practice.
2. Covid was an entirely new beast that needed to be understood and tamed back in late 2019. Governments had no choice but to be reactive. Mistakes were inevitable, even from the wisest and most knowledgeable medical and political leaders. But compared to the rest of the world, Canada's response (PM & Premiers from 3 political parties), Canada clearly did one of the best jobs in minimizing stress to the work force, the medical system, and the general population. We were especially good at minimizing deaths.
I don't care if they did what they did to get re-elected. The majority of Canadians are well-informed and intelligent. The will of the majority should in fact force reluctant leaders to do their bidding.
3. IMHO, BB's problems have almost nothing to do with branding.
(a) All the design wins for QNX in automotive and the g.e.m. have not been hampered by the "BlackBerry" overhang. To put a comic spin on it, no auto CEO has ever said, "Wait a minute, aren't you guys supposed to be selling phones with physical keyboards and no apps?"
(b) The problems in Cybersecurity sales come mainly from brutal competition offered by Microsoft and VMware (deploying AirWatch and Carbon Black). They can bundle cheap MDM to UEM in packaged software + virtualization + cloud sales. BlackBerry needed to create its own differentiated SW package to compete, or the equivalent of the value QNX has in IoT. They bet on the integration of Cylance into that package as their differentiator. We'll find out soon enough if it works.
(c) Perceptions caused by the name "BlackBerry" may cause problems for retail investors, and also for owners of small-to-medium size businesses. However, I think Chen, everyone in the C-Suite, and the Board of Directors have thought long and hard about the issue, and I'm trusting to their wisdom. Chen has frequently commented on this, saying that a lot of doors are actually open to BB sales teams because of the company's name & history.
