The short itnerest increased 940K in the first 2 weeks of Feb. With a high of $2 there isn't much left to squeeze out of a short position. IMHO this is not additional shorting by retail investors and as you noted they are now covering (and even going long). That additional 940K net short interest is more likely to be a fund (hedge). As previously posted, there is a lot of shorting and short covering within the same reporting periods. Shorting and covering for some quick profits while depressing the share price.
