Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia, regulator to the engineering profession, has imposed suspensions and sanctions totalling $226,500 against three of its members over the failure of the tailings dam at Imperial Metals Corp.'s Mount Polley mine. The three worked on the mine's dam ahead of the collapse of an embankment that led to a large release of tailings in 2014. The release generated many headlines, along with years of litigation that included a $108-million settlement with one of the engineering firms.
The sanctions are contained in decisions that the EGBC released on Friday, March 11. Those sanctioned include Stephen Rice, who served as the senior engineer on the project. Also penalized is Todd Martin, who had been the senior engineer in 2011 and 2012. The final penalty went to Laura Fidel, who worked as a junior engineer in 2013 and 2014. Mr. Martin settled the matter through a consent order, while the sanctions against Mr. Rice and Ms. Fidel were imposed through a disciplinary order.
