Even if the car is charged with power from coal, the fact is a crappy coal plant is about 35 % efficient, take another 5% for transmission and charging losses, and you are at 30% efficent. Gas cars on daily use are about 12% efficient, then consider all the losses of the gasoline supply chain along the way. Batteries take a bit more energy to produce then the engine of a car, and there are more metals in a EV. Cars last 20 years these days, so as the previous poster says (and data I see says its sooner) 8 years is the break even. (I see about 4) so the rest of the cars life it is much, much better. AND if power is from nuclear, hydro, wind etc, then there is that oher massive reduction. Not an option for ICE car. Besides EVs are so much nicer to drive.
