You are correct, patents are what protect a company from having someone else come in and produce the same product and stealing sales. 

Canopy's patents will be worth millions (IMHO) once the US Legalizes as other Food and Beverage companies looking to get into the Cannabis sector will have little choice at this point than to either buy out the patents or pay a royality to the companies that hold the ones they need access to.

Forward thinking.. that's what it's all about.
