Gold exploitation in San Juan will depend on study results

SANTO DOMINGO. -The initiation or definitive rejection of the gold extraction works in the Romero Project in San Juan de la Maguana, will depend on the results of the environmental studies and the granting of the environmental license granted by Environment as well as the permission of exploitation, responsibility of the President of the Republic.

The Constitutional Court considered as valid a previous sentence of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of First Instance of the Judicial District of San Juan de la Maguana, which in a preventive manner had ordered to stop the work of the Canadian capital company GoldQuest Dominicana, SRL

The appellants of the judgment of the court of San Juan before the TC, sought that the latter order the withdrawal of the work equipment used for exploratory purposes, because they understood that the exploitation in that area would affect the flow of the rivers that flow from the north to the south of the country for the materials that are usually used in the extraction of the mineral.

mining response

The mining company defended its position alleging that they are waiting for the exploitation license and asked the TC to guarantee them "due administrative process, which constitutes a fundamental right protected in the Constitution."

reactions

The discussions for and against the exploitation of gold in San Juan have been going on for just over five years.

On this matter, members of the science society as well as members of the clergy have expressed themselves.

Among his approaches is the idea that mining is to be carried out in low-altitude areas, in the basal plane of the mountains and not in steep mountains where the waters that guarantee long-term development are produced.

They assure that the environmental liability left by the mines in mountainous areas can never be compensated, especially when the cloud forest and water-producing areas are involved.

However, if the project is approved, it is estimated that the community would benefit with just over 100 million dollars and the implementation of a friendly extraction model.

The appellant, Messrs. Alexander Arias Bid and compartes, filed the appeal for constitutional review by petition filed with the General Secretariat of the Criminal Jurisdiction of San Juan in 2018.
