I also thought as you as I first got into it when the Quebec stock savings plan came into existance and have made mostly along the way. Of course they made bad decisions especially mostly by naivity IMO not considering what they would be getting themselves into when trying to move into other behometh companies' turf .
The market and trading is no where near what it was in those days of buy and hold as shorting has become a greater and greater part of the activity BBD's being 30 % of its volume.
I don't think that BBD for now at least is not looked upon as a good inverstment to put into one of those diversified portfolios that you mentioned as being true companies.
Those companies of course still existbut I should say also the revenue stream for the banks and houses in the equity market has changed 100 fold based more on volume now than anything else. Commissions have made it so that anyone can get into the game

I've owned Bombardier shares for decades, and yes still make show excellent returns despite the company being a dog (mostly because of managements grand ideas). I don't know why exactly but never beleived the company would go under (dual share structure did not hurt). I'm always looking for mispriced companies. Refreshing to see Martel handle himself.
