As far as liquidity is concerned. the mere fact that shorting has become mainstream in trading accounts for much of that liquidity which also adds more tools for manipulation of that price . Check the bi-weekly summary reports from IIROC and the volumes involved.
And comparing it to an auction..really ?? have you ever seen an auctioneer selling to the lowest bidder and then turn right around and putting it on the block again for a hefty profit?
Not an auction at all..at least not a fair .
Market makers in this sense are auctioneers being the go between buyers and sellers.
You see it every day and casinos are at least regulated far better than the cdn stock market.
