Ceara Hatton according to environmental study at Los Romero mine in San Juan de La Maguana

Santo Domingo, March 11 – The Minister of the Environment, Miguel Ceara Hatton, affirmed this Friday that he does not see any difficulty in carrying out environmental studies for the eventual exploitation of the Los Romero hill mining project in San Juan, or any other in particular.

During an interview in El Gobierno de la Maana, the official specified that carrying out the studies should not be an obstacle, since they will be evaluated by the environmental portfolio to see if this or that project complies with the legal parameters of the Dominican State .

In this sense, Ceara Hatton added that environmental permits are a necessity for any mineral extraction project, for which reason she recalled that it is the Environment that has the last word.

“I believe that if a company has to do the studies, I don't see any difficulty with them doing the corresponding studies. Afterwards, the ministry will evaluate whether or not it has an environmental impact. If he gives a yes or a no, or a conditioned yes, ”he sentenced.

He said that the Ministry of the Environment is a protection mechanism for society that should have been used more intensively.

The incumbent of the environmental portfolio regretted that at the time the ministry could have had its weaknesses, but that the current administration of the Government seeks to give it strength in environmental decision-making.

Ceara Hatton referred to these terms when talking about the refusal of the population to carry out studies to validate the exploitation or not of mining projects, such as the one on Loma Romero in the San Juan province, where a social blockade has not allowed that the investigations be carried out to determine if it is feasible or not.
