Private Equity may be the answer The public markets are just not seeing value in the Corus story. Plus, short sellers are not investing in the company and instead are profiting on devaluation (maybe even accelerating it?). When I look at the broader landscape, I am wondering at what point privitization makes sense. Just the other day I saw a public company Spark Power get taken out by a private equity firm and the shares jumped 60%. There are not a lot of great assets out there today at discounted prices. And private equity isn't always able to find the next Facebook. The PE firms are smart guys with deep pockets and I find it hard to believe this isn't an option for Corus. Of course, a deal would have to get done closer to $2.00 than $.88 + 60%. From this perspective, I personally can see value here at $.88.
The media business in Canada still hasn't recovered from C-18 and the pull back in media spending. But that will eventually right itself. Anyhow... if I was short, I would be very cautious because a private equity deal would give little time to cover. The stock markets are not supporting us... so maybe it's time for Corus to weigh other options. Just sayin'.
