In my opinion, when you own a security, I think you have a responsibility to understand what is happening with your investment,  Full stop.

Furthermore, if you purchase a stock and it happens to declare bankrupcty and the creditors take ownership of the company, then I would assume your shares get cancelled and thus it would make sense that such shares, using your terminology, "dissappear" from your brokerage account.  

All I know, I could not even imagine managing my own investments 30 or 40 years ago.  Thanks to technology, it is a great time to be an investor.
