RE:NAKED Short Report to May 31, 2024jx...a few comments..
1....naked shorting in the US is illegal - though this doesn't mean that ti doesn't happen on the NYSE from time to time by some traders.
2....because of Point 1 - I have no isea how the authors of the website you published would actually get reliable data on illegal activity. I can only reasonably conclude that the info predented is most likely bogus.
3...if somehow they were to actually get reliable info on illegal activity, the SEC would have intervened and demanded information from them on their data sources...I haven't heard of any such action in terms of this company.
4....more importantly, the numbers presented are about 1 days trading of SU stock in Canada and as suchwould be of little concern to most investors
What is actually of greater importance to Canadian investors who own stock pf a company that trades in Canada and the US, is that Canadian law regarding short selling make it quite easy to naked short and so if big American inverstors want to naked short, they can do it in Canada much more easily and within the law.
The references to NASDAQ and the US OTC market is interesting. Since neither of these markets are "exchanges" - all the trades or made through market makers. Here, market makers are are allowed to naked short to produce an efficent and smooth market. That said, as a general rule the market makers want to/try to close out their naked shorts before the close of the market so they are not caught if the there is a development overnight. So as a general rule there is not much in the way of naked shorts in these two markets.
