RE:SometimesNL. Not to be contrarian, but I have seen this concept being suggested before. The problem is that the higher the total ask size is, the more pressure it puts on the SP. It weighs it down, slows upward momentum and also alters perception. This is why you will see these ridiculously high ask lots at prices that are far out of reach. This tactic is a powerful tool used by registered and passive shorts.
Also, you are correct that locking your shares in is one way to keep them out of the hands of registered shorts, rather, preventing your broker from being able to lend the shares out. But, unless multiple millions of shares are locked in, it is usually a fruitless effort and then comes back full curcle to the first problem I mentioned earlier.....
