Cal Nano is proud to announce that it's collaborative with work with Sandia National Lab and Sal Rodriguez titled “Machinable, Larger-Scale, Self-Healing Refractory High-Entropy Alloys for Energy and Aerospace Applications” was awarded an R&D 100 award! Last week, Cal Nano's CEO Eric Eyerman got the opportunity to attend the R&D 100 Awards.

The R&D 100 Awards have been a hallmark of innovation for over 60 years, celebrating revolutionary advancements in science and technology. The annual gala is a special event that honors the remarkable achievements of the teams behind these innovations and serves as an important networking opportunity for leading innovators to connect and exchange ideas.

This R&D100 award winning project represents a significant leap in the manufacturing of refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs). By refining key variables such as temperature, pressure, and process time using the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) method, the team achieved larger-scale, high-quality RHEA components designed for commercial applications in energy and aerospace.

Previously, RHEA production was limited to small lab samples weighing fractions of an ounce. Through advanced manufacturing techniques and ongoing optimization, the team set a world record by creating a single-piece RHEA component weighing 7.72 pounds and measuring 10.3 inches by 8.6 inches by 0.26 inches. This groundbreaking achievement paves the way for broader applications in strategic industries like aerospace, energy, and national security, while also creating new opportunities for commercial scalability.

At Cal Nano, we are excited about these advancements as they align with our mission to drive innovation in material science. With our expertise in cryogenic and planetary milling of RHEA and superalloy powders and our advanced suite of in-house SPS systems, we are proud to have contributed to this groundbreaking project.

This milestone highlights the immense potential for manufacturing RHEA components at larger scales, opening up possibilities for more applications, expanded production capabilities, and greater economic impact.

Being part of the R&D 100 Awards is not only an acknowledgment of the incredible work being done but also an opportunity to connect with the brightest minds in science and technology. The event celebrates the transformative ideas that are shaping the future of innovation, and we are honored to have supported this nomination.

Congratulations to the entire team for their extraordinary achievement.
