Does TotalEnergies have a new billion-barrel discovery on its hands in Namibia?

"TotalEnergies may have another big discovery on its hands in Namibia’s Orange basin, according to four industry sources. If confirmed, a fresh find would be welcome news to a government that was last week having to rebut Shell’s view that the discoveries on its block were not currently commercial, somewhat tarnishing the basin’s glittering exploration reputation.

Semi-submersible drilling rig Deepsea Mira spudded the Tamboti-1X exploration almost three months ago in the northern part of Block 2913B. Before the well was spudded, Patrick Pouyanne, the French supermajor’s chief executive, said it would be aiming for a structure that could hold 1 billion barrels of resource. Upstream was advised last year that although Tamboti-1X was called an exploration well, its main target could be an eastern extension of a big fan complex found by TotalEnergies’ earlier Mangetti-1X probe. Well watchers said at the time that this latest probe was designed to test “the core” of this fan in order to find “better sands”.

Four sources familiar with Tamboti-1X have now told Upstream that the probe has hit hydrocarbons, though they cautioned it is too early to say if it is commercial. “The indications are that Tamboti is oily and worthy of a test; they are doing a drill stem test,” said one source. “That is correct,” confirmed another contact who follows Namibian operations closely, while a further source added: “I think they found their play on that block.”

What, so far, appears to be positive news for Tamboti was confirmed by satellite data which identified a flare at the site of Deepsea Mira at about 1pm Greenwich mean time on 10 January. A source familiar with the drilling operation said: “There was flare heat signature at (the Deepsea) Mira location, indicating a test is under way.” The Deepsea Mira was originally chartered for the Tamboti-1X well, but in late December, TotalEnergies exercised an option to extend the hire contract by up to about three months. It is unclear if the semisub will be used to drill another well near Tamboti or target one of the recently mapped prospects in the south of 2913B, a block that also hosts the multibillion-barrel Venus discovery which could be brought on stream in 2029. TotalEnergies, which is due to announce its full year results on 5 February, was approached for comment."
