The Vancouver Sun reports in its Friday edition that Internet giant America Online Inc. says a Vancouver Web access company is being used as a portal to send millions of unsolicited E-mails hawking everything from pornography and on-line college degrees to penis enlargers. The Sun's Greg Mercer writes that Peer 1 Network has been ordered by the Supreme Court of B.C. to identify clients that AOL says are behind millions of unwanted messages, called spam. AOL has filed an international subpoena with the B.C. court in connection with the massive lawsuit that the company filed in Virginia in an effort stop the nearly two billion spams sent to its E-mail system every day. Investigators at AOL have developed a list of Internet provider addresses they say are the source of spam. The users of these addresses are named in the AOL's April lawsuit as John Doe 1 through 30. AOL still does not know who they are or where they live. "These guys are pretty smart. They've figured out ways to hijack other people's addresses or have the spam appear to be coming from a different location than it really is. They're incredibly hard to track down," said Geoff Hampson, president of Peer 1.
