Sanaa: Yemeni troops have captured a rebel cleric after a fierce 50-day battle that left nearly 500 people dead, government sources said yesterday.
The almotamar website, mouthpiece of the ruling party, also quoted military officers at the scene of the clashes as saying Hussain Badr Al Deen Al Houthi, leader of an extremist group accused of sedition and rebellion, was captured on Friday night.
Military sources said Al Houthi was arrested after being injured during clashes in the Marran mountains in Sadah, north Yemen.
The Ministry of Interior, however, declined to confirm the arrest. Ruling party sources said that after being injured, Al Houthi escaped to Matar village near the Saudi border.
But some bodyguards, arrested during the Marran clashes, divulged Al Houthi's whereabouts. The troops then besieged the village and captured the cleric.
