DRC has highest number of displaced people in Africa

By Godfrey Olukya

ARU, Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) currently has the highest number of displaced people in Africa, the UN said Monday.

UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has said in a statement issued Monday that the DRC was now one of the world’s most complex humanitarian crises, in which 7.3 million people need humanitarian assistance.

"The relentlessly acute nature of the crisis, the lack of basic social services throughout the country and the persistent armed conflict have led to the internal displacement of 3.8 million people. This is the highest number of displaced people in the African continent," said the UN statement.

The humanitarian crisis is mainly due to the country's numerous conflicts, namely in the eastern North Kivu region and to the growing intercommunal tensions and violence affecting new parts of the country, namely in the central Kasai area.

Chaos in the Kasai region started last year when police killed the leader of Kamuina Nsapu militiamen -- also named Kamuina Nsapu. Since then, the militiamen have conducted numerous violent raids in Kasai.

The Catholic church in DRC recently said that it had carried out an investigation and established that over 3,000 people had been killed in Kasai and over 1.3 million displaced since August last year.

What is the point of all these posts?  To get the SP lower?

, cash will solve many problems for the country thats why the mine will go ahead as planned.

The point is geopolitical unstability, KAT share price has done well and will continue to do well as long as mining operations in the DRC are uniterrupted.

I am a Ivanhoe shareholder which I bought in the 70 cents and still holding lots. Now I'm also a Katanga shareholder and loaded up which I will be holding for a while so I can see the $5s. This political stuff doesn't scare me off!!

DRYOASIS - Do yourself a favour and look up the history of the DRC and then compare it to KAT's chart. Then get back to me.

I would love to invest here but I just can't stomach the political situation, I posted here to get some feed back from investors, perhaps I'm not reading this right and maybe you're right, the political unstability and another civil war would not impact KAT's operation like the chart suggest. I'm still not convinced though. I hope you all do well with your investment and when ...more

DRYOASIS - You sound like every other Cobalt investor trying to get us to sell and buy some Canadian Cobalt mines that are years if not a decade away from mining cobalt. No thank you. KAT is the no-brainer in the cobalt field.

DTYOASIS - Here's a link to Oxfam since you seem to want to everything you can to help. Oxfam Somehow my gut tells me you aren't really that interested in the crisis other than how it relates to this stock.

People are throwing just any mud on the board. I don't understand the point.

Dryoasis is just upset that his investment in FT is not performing as well as KAT.  He is disillusioned with FT as am I.   He simply needs to recognize that the Alpha stock in the Cobalt space is KAT, with big money and big network Glencore behind them.  He simply needs to redeploy Capital into KAT and be happy. Sanddevil - I have just as much invested in ECS and doing quite well with that investment.

The DRC needing money is even more imperative that they fast track KAT.  The Government of DRC owns 25% of KAT operations.   It is in their best interest to get the mine up and running and keep it running with whatever security is required.     SD

The thing that holds me back from investing in the DRC is nationalization of mining projects. DRC government is extremely corrupted and cannot be trusted, unless of course big time bribery is included.  The country is on the brink of civil war, I'm not making this shite up, read the news my friends ... oh yeah ... the chart shows that nothing will happen to KAT, well this time the ...more

I got the perfect solution for your delema. Don't buy KAT. Problem solved.
