I am optimistic

I say (hope) the delay is a good sign that talks are in progress to somehow find a solution that favors PLU but also sends a strong message (fines) to the company.

This coming from someone who has NO clue how the legal system works in Peru. As archaic as I think the Peru laws are set in stone I cannot fathom how you enter a building to pay your dues but somehow it's not good enough because it is deemed late.

I walk into a bank, Wal-Mart, Costco etc. before the doors shut and I am not told I cannot do my business before I leave. This seems asinine and so third world thinking.

The point is that these incompetent managers walked in at the deadline. That is inexcusable. The deadline each year is June 30 for payment of concession fees to INGEMMET. These should have been paid weeks earlier to be safe. This was entirely avoidable if they had a good land manager or lawyer managing the administration of these concessions. They clearly did not. Sounds 3rd world to me Macusani has not lost any of its concessions, the process to rectify this situation was of an administrative nature, and the resolutions issued are not issued via a court of law. So you got a bunch of schmucks sitting around a table making critical decisions that impact not only the company but the locals who will benefit from this economically? Can't wait to ...more

There's indeed corruption in the mining industry but I'm pretty sure this is not the case. Peruvian regulations in general are punitive and the worst part is that most peruvian are happy with that. That's something I kind of hate about peruvian culture and which clearly PLU is being a victim of. If you mix punitive regulations with lazy and inefficient authorities (MINEM) then ...more
