That ~14% yield will jump to probably ~15%-25% for most

of the BPO prefers went they reset.

All just my opinion/view/thinking

How safe is the 14%+ yield? A 25% yield almost always means extreme caution.

How safe???    First of all, these are Prefer shares..... So as I understand, it's all or nothing bascially.  Not like common shares where Dividends can be reduced at any time or even cancelled.   Second, these are cummulative.   So how safe....... basically boils down to the question will the company default and never pay?  Basically go Bankrupt ...more

"... yield will jump to probably ~15%-25% for most..." You have the right to your opinion. Most market participants clearly think differently since the shares are trading where they are because some shareholders are selling at these prices. Are they all crazy?  Are they all wrong? If it were so easy and riskless everyone would buy BPO preferred shares.  Yet, they do not ...more

Thank Pierre for trying to reassure me..   Unfortunately I worry, as a result, even though I'm getting CRAZY amounts of $$$$$$$ Dividends deposited into my account, I can't really fully enjoy the "fruits of BPO investments".... So Strange.....  Getting all this money $$$$$$ deposited into my account but can't really fully enjoy.   All just my ...more

Hi again, Your response was actually funny! If BPY does go bankrupt, then we lost money believing/betting that one of the greatest real estate empires (ok, THE greatest!) in Canadian history would survive.  Lol. So that literally has to happen for us to permanently lose our invested capital.  I just don't believe that will ever happen nor do I think Brookfield will find a creative ...more

Hi Carena....   For me, I think ANYTHING is possible.    I went CRAZY on BPO.... that's why I worry.   While it's probably very very unlikely, possibility is still there, and with me going CRAZY, how unlikely it is, the amount invested makes me worry.   I will probably reduce my holdings even though I think they will be ok and are an excellent ...more

You seem too nervous to be in the stock market. The stock market is about calming down, breathing, letting the winds and tides pass. We know that good, well-run companies always end up gaining the upper hand. I bought CM for $48 at the end of October: when no one wanted it. It is over $54 today and the dividend pays above 6%. At such a rate, as with BPO, I am willing to wait as long as it takes. I ...more

I'm a Crazy Trader..... While the Dividend Yield here is CRAZY, that's not the primary reason why I'm here.....  I'm here looking for 100%+ Gain on Share Price in a couple years.  The dividend is just gravy.   That's how I play...... For that type of gain, usually the risk level is extremely high.   Usually High Yield means High Risk.... High ...more

Indeed, if you live everything 100% and you don't know what you are buying (I'm not talking about BPOs here), in fact, you will sometimes have reasons to rejoice, but also reasons to experience cuachemardesque nights .

DemDem, you're right, it can be very scary.   I do try to do a little DD on the stocks I buy, but really I don't "know" the business or the companies I invest in.   I'm all over the place.      Before BPO, I jumped in TNT without looking first.   I jumped back out after couple days, after doing some DD.   That was ...more

Be careful not to play day-trader in a CELI account, however, the tax authorities have given some people nightmares.  The Canada Revenue Agency does not look favourably on stock market traders, so much so that it prohibits them from using TFSAs to make tax-sheltered money. It is not the size of their returns that makes an investor what is known as a day trader, but the frequency of their ...more

Thanks DemDem for heads up....  I estimate it will take 2 years for 100% gain on BPO.  So, that kind of gives you an idea of how long or longer I'm hold stocks.   I target 100%ers.....   over 1 or 2 or 3 years....  I'm not trying for 2% daily..... I'm not that good.    Plus, I'm already stressed enough playing the "slow" game ...more

Good morning, For posterity, I have been managing my own investment accounts for 15 years and after thousands of transactions for dividends, takeovers, privatizations , merger, stock dividends, withholding tax etc etc tc,  other than a few dividends being a day or 2 late, I have never had an issue whatsoever. Our financial institutions do an utterly amazing job of managing wha is a very ...more

Carena, Just stating what I've experienced.    Have you had any shares go bankrupt or defunct?    If so, how were the shares dealt with in your accounts.    Stelco goes back probably over 15 years ago.    The other stock that just dissappeared from my account more recently.   The stock sat in my account for years, then just dissappeared. But like I said, I haven't faced any BS. In my opinion, when you own a security, I think you have a responsibility to understand what is happening with your investment,  Full stop. Furthermore, if you purchase a stock and it happens to declare bankrupcty and the creditors take ownership of the company, then I would assume your shares get cancelled and thus it would make sense that such ...more
