Quadravest update to NOV 15 DFN UNIT NAV @$14.57

So the UNIT NAV came in a bit lower than our estimates  and needs to gain 42 cents by the mid december date  to pay to commons. I doubt we will see a continued bull run next month that would be a strong as what we have witnessed in the past few weeks. The markets of late have BEEN very unpredictable and very attached to the FED speak and  media reports on the economy. Not sure how trustworthy the data is. Oil prices decline had more to do with the inflation holding near lows than anything the FED has done.

One more thing to consider in the U.S. is the ending of the moratorium on student loan repayments in mid-October.  Starting in November we will see billions of dollars get removed from the economy each month to pay back college and university student loans that hadn't needed to be repaid since the start of the pandemic. Thinki about how much money that is currently chasing prices up for ...more

I think this holiday season will see many working class people spending  a LOT less on presents and XMAS. Too many maxed out credit cards, and with rents, insurance , utilities and food  all having gone up HUGE in the past year. There is the OLD saying. "There is still month left , at the end of the money."

If so, then what you wrote just adds to my post.  The decline in inflation will continue and probably accelerate.  Lots of parts of the economy will start growing again next year as interest rates get lowered slowly by the Fed and BOC.  This will also help Canadian banks and insurers grow so alot of DFN's portfolio will start growing again as will their shares.  DFN will ...more

I dont think the FED will be as agressive in cutting rates as they were in jacking them. I believe 2024 is going to be a tough year for the markets.

I agree.  But you saw how the market jumped a few days ago because of a tiny drop in the inflation rate.  A tiny drop in the interest rate will do the same.  We shoulld see some nice market rises next year in anticipation of interest rate and inflation decreases.

I think the FED and BOC will have to cut rates a lot faster than we think. In Canada, the mortgage rollovers will suck so much disposable cash from the economy that things are going to come to a grinding halt. The housing market in downtown Vancouver just sh@t the bed. The number of listings is exponentially rising and the prices are dropping. It's even worse on the sunshine coast. Friends ...more

Cash flow from the  holdings dividends  only pays the  distributions for preferred shares in the split fund. The commons only get the leverage from  capital gains, of which there have been nada in 2023...

Yes, this is something everyone must grasp to appreciate the risks and rewards of owning the capital shares. Paying a dividend even when the threshold has been breached accelerates the eventual demise of this investment since some underlying holdings would have to be liquidated at depressed prices in order to fund distributions. This would crystallize losses and permanently impair the NAV.

merlinboy: I guess you should have read the prospectus before buying shares which you didn't understand. Not getting dividends has always been a risk for holders of the Class A shares from the day they were created. Live and learn.
