So DFN  definitely not a lock to pay this month or the next...despite what the permabulls have been suggesting.

For the record, I trimmed today. No one ever lost money taking a profit. I collected the January distribution and today's shares were sold at profit. Have immediately sunk the proceeds into money market for 4.55% and will see where we go this month. if the markets climb my current position continues to earn as does my money market fund. If it drops, I will ease back in with the avail ...more

I took 50 K CAD out of the  stockmarket gains and put it in a one year term deposit at my Mexico bank, @ 11.9 % before taxes . 11.5 % after taxes . More going to be going in if i can get another chance  at a higher exchange rate, like about 13 pesos to 1 CAD would be nice.

I suppose it's fine since you're living there for part of the year you can fund your retirement. I'm more comfortable holding a pile of FFN prefs where my distribution rate is close to 10%. My 4.55% money market fund is a slush fund for buying opps

11.9%? Wow, which bank is this?
Comment by mouserman on Jan 12, 2024 12:18pm
BBVA, which is mostly spanish speaking, but not a problem communicating with the Bank manager who took care of our investment. You need an Mexico address and a temporary residency with an RFC number ( tax  number) . mexican peso has been the  2nd strongest currency vs the USD the past year. CAD has really fallen since we first came looking for a retirement place a few years ago. Was over ...more

The only condition to get that kind of interest rate, is that it had to be new money ( from Canada) deposited within previous 30 days.

WOW MM, I'm in Puerto Vallarta for Jan thru Mar (hopefully), looking for expat retirement options, and I live in Barrie Ontario.    Too cool!!  I'm applying for my permanent res, the airport immigration stamped the wrong side of my passport, now the INM is telling me I need to exit Mexico and come back with the right stamp !!!   Man,   IDK, maybe I'll ...more
Comment by mouserman on Jan 12, 2024 1:37pm
Yes i almost had that happen. Immigration was supposed to give you only a 30day stamp, with canje status. You have 30 days to start the process in mexico to get residenccy , whether its temp or permanente. Luckily we saw before we left the booth, and took it back and explained what we needed.
Comment by DanRiffs7 on Jan 12, 2024 4:39pm
Maybe I could go back to the airport and do that.   thanks MM

Do you have to have Mexican citizenship for this manoever?
Comment by FatTraderDude01 on Jan 12, 2024 1:56pm
MM, Im curious.... I assume you are converting CAD to Peso and buying the one year term deposit in Pesos?  Are you concerned about the Peso devaluing over that period of time? I imagine the cost of living is lower in Mexico?  I assume is it safe where you are? hopefully police are honest FTD
Comment by mouserman on Jan 12, 2024 2:02pm
Yes converting CAD to peso. We plan on spending a lot of time here, and very little in Canada, so not too concerned about the CAD/MXN exchange once we have a large amount here. I dont see a scenerio where the Current govt in Canada makes the peso depreciate in any big way.  Medical system in Mexico is not free, but is miles better than the farce in BC now. Even free is too expensive if you ...more

Im not sure Alberta is any better with Smith experimenting with management configurations. all I ask is that you make sure you have at least $500K coverage for each, just in case. Some providers ask you to pay up front which is akward.. Just looking out for you
Comment by FatTraderDude01 on Jan 12, 2024 2:00pm
MM, what if you leave the country and you term is still in the bank? Are their rules about how long you have to stay there? I hope you have good medical insurance, it can be expensive there for foreigners
Comment by mouserman on Jan 12, 2024 6:49pm
Medical insurance is cheaper here than in Canada, but i am just pay as i go for now. No serious issues  @ 68 years of age and i have not one prescription . I prefer the doctors here who will see you on short notice and meet in person, and will do whatever tests you ask for. You can choose which treatment YOU want , without some political agenda threatening doctors with fines and jailtime ...more

MM....I love Mexico and especially the people...have been going there for 25 years. I am 73 and if 15 years younger would have bought a winter abode there. Renting is very viable for most seniors as it is very reasonable if you know what you're doing.  Going to southern Spain for6 weeks and living in a 1 bedroom condo on the Mediterranean.  Food prices same as Canada bit beer is .50 ...more

itsthehitman, I am late 50's retired and looking for a vacation spot for about 4-6 weeks myself. I have been looking at the Costa Del Sol/Andalucia. This popular with the Brits too. Spanish food is delighful and the people are so amazingly friendly. Not as hot as Florida in Jan-March but still very pleasant, very safe, the cost of living is low and healthcare is one of the best.

Chiang Mai, Thailand for me. Super safe, fantastic food and some of the best health care in the world. I pay locally for whatever I need and it's cheap. $324 cad for 3 fillings to replace old ones last week and a cleaning. Dermatology, small operations... You name it. Basically cash flow purchases. Been coming here since 2012. Retired too a while ago when I was 52 but live in Vancouver most of ...more

We had a condo in Hua HIN thailand , for 7 years, and were lucky to sell just before COVID. Now the bar streets  that used to be really lively are empty, as the tourists have not really returned in any big way. We did spend some time in Chiang Mai, but the weather there doesnt compare to Lake Chapala area. DIDNT enjoy the smoke in Chiang Mai when they burn off the fields every year there ...more

Yeah you need to be out of CNX by mid Feb to escape the smoke. The tourists have returned, at least in Chiang Mai. It's busy... For all the years I've been here, I've never been to Hua Hin. Not a beach person I guess.
Comment by mouserman on Jan 15, 2024 9:05am
We loved Hua Hin and thought it was going to be our retirement locale. But over the 14 years we spent the winter there, the thai culture changed, becoming more americanized. We are golfers, and HUA hin had 10  world class courses within an hour of our condo. I am sure those took a hit during COVID as well as prices jumped while tourists stayed away.  Chiang MAI can get cold, we were ...more

I agree, I don't think DFN will be able to pay the dividend consistently. This is a great stock to trade though. I think we will see lots of volatility on this in 2024.
