IKEA in the earnings

IKEA in the earningsSeems like IKEA is telling their suppliers to consider using DURABIND.

"Our key strategic account in wood composites, which is an international retailer that is backward integrated into wood panel manufacturing, continues to raise awareness across its supply chain of the need to move to bio-based glues which plays directly into the advantages offered by DuraBind™"

To reduce the climate footprint of board materials, IKEA will replace all fossil-based adhesives with biobased adhesives. By 2030, IKEA aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from glue by 30%. Glue in sheet materials currently accounts for 5% of the climate footprint of the entire IKEA value chain.

“This confirms the need for more glue with a much lower climate footprint and that small changes can have a big impact. We hope this will inspire others to follow,” says Venla Hemmil, Material and Technology Engineer at the Swedish company whose headquarters are located in Delft, the Netherlands.

The intention is for supplying companies to gradually switch to biobased adhesives. At the IKEA Industry factory in Lithuania, a large-scale adhesive system has now been made from technical starch from maize. This is the result of 10 years of searching for alternatives to fossil-based adhesives. At the same time, several trials with other adhesive systems are being carried out.

“Together with the increasing use of recycled wood and the commitment to 100% renewable energy in production, this is a milestone in our efforts to make our wood-based products more sustainable,” says Andreas Rangel Ahrens, head of climate at IKEA Group.
