Slow grind lower

For me, this is where the argument to buy and hold looses its appeal.  For each tick lower, even the sweetest dividends do not compensate for capital loss.  Recession fears have the market walking on eggshells.

Yes yes, I know many will say if you don't sell you have not lost anything in long run.  However, oil from 2014 down to 2020, was a great example of misery that showed how long it can take to recoup funds when buying at a peak.

I really don't think you can compare oil to Canadian banks.   If someone buying today at $15 isn't sitting on a profit of compound 7 per cent per annum in 5 years time, I will be very surprised.

Yes comparing oil with banks was not a fair comparison ...  however, market downturns can remain for quite some years and watching stocks languish in the red, even when getiting a dividend, can be a very very long time that some retirees may not have.  We all exit this world at some stage and I prefer to leave my estate in the black.

The reason I invested in this as opposed to a regular Canadian bank stock ETF is that I get paid to wait with the higher distributions thanks to the covered call premiums. I intend to get growth in this investment over time by reinvesting the distributions.  Market appreciation is secondary. The only thing that would concern me is if the banks started cutting their dividends.  But I ...more
