In the event of a default what happens with this pending sale? I ask because wouldn't this be a waste of time if they know they're about to default and these transactions would just get tied up in bankruptcy proceedings?

The transactions are a good indication that they are not likely planning a default.  A buyout offer to remaining shareholders is still a possibility, as stated in my previous post.
