It's time for value names particularly small-caps to shine: Strategist

James Telfser, partner and portfolio manager at Aventine Investment Counsel, joins BNN Bloomberg for his view on the TSX. Telfser says that despite the Canadian benchmark having outperformed its peers, there are challenges ahead. He is finding opportunities in TSX value names within various sectors including consumer staples, communications, etc. He likes names such as Premium Brands and Sangoma Technologies.

You can add Jason Donville (pages 6 and 7) and David Barr to the list of STC bulls. However, keep in mind that these two tend to either hit a home run or strike out with their picks (Donville was a huge bull on Valeant Pharmaceuticals and Concordia Healthcare back in the day, while more recently, David Barr was (still is?) a big fan of the likes of MAV Beauty Products and We Commerce).

Yes you're right, Jason Donville either hits a home run or the company goes to zero. I can remember a number of his recommendations that didn't do well over the years. Does anyone remember Glentel? He was pumping the company for so long on Bnn. The store owned by Glentel, also under the brand Wirelesswave, mostly carried Blackberry phones and we know what happened after that. Apple ...more

Yes, Donville was recommending CSU way back when it was trading at around $80 a share. It's now over $2,000 a share. Enghouse was also a huge win. Same with Paladin Labs which was bought out for about $2.7B. Barr also has had a number of successes in his Pender Small Cap Opportunities mutual fund. He typically looks for companies he feels will be taken out at a handsome premium, and he has ...more
