Cybertruck vs Ford F150

I'm not a fan of the look of the Cybertruck, but the vehicle now has1.7 million pre-orders.  I believe that  the 2nd largest pre-order size ever for any new vehicle was 400,000.  Therefore, somebody must like the Cybertruck.

Who knows how many cancellations will take place when it comes time for people to write the cheque, but I believe that with Tesla will continue to drive down their costs and retail prices.

The one piece body of the Cybertruck saves hundreds of parts and thousands of in-plant operations.

The Cybertruck doesn't require paint which saves about $3,500 per vehicle as well as saving nearly a billion dollars of CAPEX because it doesn't require a paint shop.

Telsa has zero marketing costs (saves about $2,500 per vehicle.

Tesla doesn't pay dealers which saves about $2,500 per car but in the case of trucks while GMC and Ford have been gouging their truck customers to the tune of $10,000 to $20,000 per truck above sticker prices on top of the huge profit margins built into Ford and GMC trucks.

When you throw in the US$7,500 government incentive for EV's (up to $15,000 in California) but only $5,000 in Canada (plus $8,000 for buyers in Quebec and $4,000 for buyers in BC), the math becomes over whelming.

In regards to the Cybertruck not being for contractors, as the former owner of a contracting company that bough many pick up trucks, I have to disagree.

Cybertrucks:

* won't dent
* won't rust (which is huge for contractors)
* shatterproof windshield and windows

Cybertruck vs Ford F150

* Ford payload 1,800 (up to 3,250 on higher priced models) ....Tesla 3,500 lbs
* Ford towing capacity 8.200 lbs (up to 14,000 on higher priced models)...Telsa 14,000 lbs
* Ford 22 mpg combined.......Tesla 210 mpg combined
* Ford 2x per year oil changes....Tesla no oil changes
* Ford scheduled tune ups....Tesla no tune ups
* Ford maintenance or brakes is much higher (I can't find the #s) that Tesla's regenerative brakes
* Ford: new model every year..Tesla: over-the-air updates (weekly) keeps every vehicle brand new
* Tesla's are the safest vehicles in the world

There is a lot of mis-information on the internet about many things, but the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty< Doubt) campaign that the legacy auto makers have waged against EV's has been incredible.

Musks claims sound like a total pipe dream that overlooks the obvious...accidents! How many vehicles do you know, that over their lifespan, have never been in an accident? Doesn't dent? Really...B$...Vehicle heading 60 km per hour runs into something and it wont dent? I still remember Musk claims that the cybertrucks windows were shatterproof as well...only to have two of them smash " ...more

That's the best you got?  Really?  Instead of addressing the relevant information, you resort to that????? Yes, the famous broken window demonstration became famous which drew a lot of free advertising to Tesla.  Then Tesla fixed the problem.  Using an example of driving a vehicle into a fixed object at 60km (37 miles per hour) and expecting no dents is a ridiculous ...more

obscure has been viewing too many videos from steve mark ryan and tony seba.

Tony Seba may be the most forward thinking man alive today. SMR is usually right, but geez that guy grates on ya.  He is even more annoying that me.

i have no doubt of better specs for the CT. The issue here is supply and value of time Tesla aim for 50,000 CT/yr in 2nd half 2023, and maybe 100,000/yr by 2025 Tesla Will Produce 100,000 Cybertrucks Per Year By 2025: Report (insideevs.com) To just fullfil the pre-orders, it would take 10 years (with no new orders) using my estimate below Year CT/yr ...more

Call me crazy but I actually like the design of the Cybertruck. Would I buy one now? Nope.  Don't need one at this point in my life.  But if I was 40 years younger? I would be looking it seriously.  The thing is basically built like a tank. In terms of regenerative braking and brake replacement.  I just spend a ton of money replacing the brakes on my Hyundai Accent ...more

using obscure1's antic, 'is that all you got'? i can change brake pads myself, it's an easy wrench task.  Brake pads are cheap. On the other hand, EVs wears out tires much faster (if you don't know why, go ask your mechanic friends or google search). A set of new tires plus installation and balancing cost way way more than a set of brake pads which i can replace myself ...more

Yup it does cost a bit more in terms of tire replacements if you speed off the line at a stoplight.  However, the car's ability to get out in front of other cars from a merge lane or just the ability to embarass all the jackasses trying to impress the world with their macho cars and trucks is well worth it.  Just ask any Tesla owner.   There are lots of ways to experience ...more

sorry, even if EV drivers don't show off (hard acceleration) and drive normally like ICE car, EVs will need tires replacement sooner than an equivalent ICE vehicle.  You need to ask Experienced on this so he can ask his many expert contacts to tell him why so you will know.

I can attest to exactly what Obscure1 mentioned, having ironically traded my 2011 F150 with Ecoboost for the Tesla. Had to do brakes twice on it and changed tires around 85000 kms. It had a little over 100 000 kms when I traded it.  Tesla changed tires at 50 000 kms at the same time, rotors at the rear were rusty, because not being used enough. Need to exercise the brakes more in harsh ...more

thanks for proving MY point that tesla EVs need to do more tire changes.
Comment by mrbb on Apr 25, 2023 12:59am
so, those EV owners who like to impress other jackasses with their quick EV acceleration really care about wearing out brake pads faster than ICE car owners?  BTW, you keep referencing to tesla EVs.  Most mainstream brands of EV like toyota, nissan, hyundai, VW EVs don't have impressive acceleration that can impress ICE jackassess.   It is obvious you are only bringing the ...more

Good for you!! A man of many talents.  I'll give you a call the next time i need a brake job.

one thing do puzzle me is why would a man with wealth of knowledge and monetary wealth resort to driving hyundai accent and ordered a hyundai EV?  Can't u afford something half decent? I'm not familar with hyundai car design and brake configuration might be illogical to the norm. Their cars are cheaper for a reason.

Let me add to your confusion.... Both my cars are 8 years old...

Good question -- Without going into a lot of detail, suffice it to say that I have never been a materialistic person and have lived a simple life and and a rewarding life not only in terms of investments but more importantly in terms a having a wonderful life with a nertwork of great friends and a fabulous life partner (my wife). I've pre-ordered 2 cybertrucks. I expect at soonest to get my first opportunity to purchase one in 2027, then I have another that I plan to auction off if demand is still high (or give to a friend, etc).  The one concern I do have is the cybertruckbis expected to be a heavy unit from what my friends are saying... We shall see.

i had the urge to pre order a CT too but at that time of CT announcement years ago, the first version CT was few inches longer than my garage could fit in.  Also i felt it couldn't be done at 39,999 USD for the entry version CT so i didn't want to order something that could be revise greatly.  Now i heard tesla had reduced the length for the CT somewhat but the price would be ...more
