Go on, tell me exactly how a buyback is a transfer from sharehokders to the company.

Shareholders own the company. So if you transfer wealth from shareholders to the company, you are effectively transfering wealth from shareholders to shareholders. Therefore that is somewhat meaningless. The real wealth transfer that occurs is from some shareholders to other shareholders. I don't think that is the right way to look at this. In my opinion, buybacks are beneficial if they increase the wealth of hypothetical investors who would invest only in that stock compared to their wealth if there was no buyback. If you think that another stock is more profitable, then you should sell and buy that other stock. TNT should try to maximize the gains for those who invest ...more
