Anyone whose child has had to wait for nine hours in the emergency room to see a doctor knows that we can do better as a country. Why is it that Qatar, a country that embraced its LNG industry, has nearly three times the number of doctors per capita than Canada? We can do it all: increase our oil and natural gas production, at the highest environmental standards anywhere in the world, thereby allowing us to help meet the world’s needs while benefiting from its revenue and allowing for critical incremental investments in our national infrastructure, all while further allowing us to expand environmental initiatives such as carbon capture and storage. As I drove the streets of Doha, I couldn’t help but think, “This could have been us.”

EN is letting the $$$ cloud his judgment.  Qatar is not a democracy.  It has less than 1/10th the population of Canada and of that about 80% are ex-pats.  It is smaller than the state of Connecticut.  They clearly don't have to deal with vast areas of infrastructure and can't grow a blade of grass.  Without the fossil fuels to pay for all the food that has to be ...more

What colour are your woke glasses? Hows the scenery of the tent cities that occupy every city? What about the closed hospitals due to lack of staffing? Maybe your lucky enough not to have a terminal illness so that you can enjoy the endless wait times for health care? How about the fact we are the most taxed and have the highest debt per capita of any nation on the planet? And the absolute best is ...more

Interesting insight. Where can I look to see that we have the highest debt per capita? I never thought we were the highest in the world.

Those figures don't include all of the provinces debt that we have to pay.

ROF, the responses have been ridiculous.  EN is talking of what the Canadian health system could be if O&G where allowed to have been developed, ie the country rolling in dough. Highest debt per capita, try 21st. Highest tax, try 63rd. Actual postions could be argued, but not the fact we are nowhere near "the highest".  OYE, AB separating.

It wouldn't matter how much O&G revenue you throw at the healthcare system because Canada has one of the highest levels of obesity.  Lifestyle choices and the resulting chronic health conditions are the biggest factor eroding healthcare in nearly all western countries.  So EN can talk all he wants about all the $$$ we could reap but it won't change the underlying problem ...more
