Trump may not tariff Canadian oil

Canada is the largest external supplier of energy to the US, reaching nearly $160 billion in 2022, most of which is crude oil, petroleum products or natural gas.
“We import a lot of energy from Canada. I can’t imagine that the president would want to tax that, because all it would do would be to raise our costs and not help anything with more American jobs,” Ross told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. “So I think it’s easy to have the fears be overblown.”
Trump has called “tariff” the “most beautiful word in the dictionary” and promised his protectionist trade strategy will boost US manufacturing.
Ross was commerce secretary from 2017 to 2021, when the first Trump administration imposed tariffs on goods including steel and aluminum from China, Canada, Mexico and the European Union. Ross also helped renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, which was replaced with what’s now called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, altering the region’s rules on auto manufacturing and a host of other issues.
Ross urged western countries to increase their defense budgets. Trump has long criticized members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, including Canada, that don’t meet their pledge to spend 2% of gross domestic product on defense. “Clearly the world is a more dangerous place right now,” Ross said in the CBC interview.
“Canada has to realize that America does have a much sturdier set of principles and policies now than what it had before,” he said. “So if I were Canada, I would be looking for what things Canada can volunteer to do to facilitate the relationship with the US.”

Trump isn't interested in tariffing little old Canada into the poorhouse. We're already there, and when he tariffed steel and aluminum he caught Castreau pulling a fast one on him by importing cheap crapp steel and aluminum from China for a bargain, and reselling it to America for a premium. He can't stand the sight of Castreau in the first place, so really it was just a peeing contest ...more

Justin Trudeau was buying steel and aluminium from China??? This is on top of driving down the price of WTI??? Where, oh where does he find the time??? LOL I would think that somebody who calls himself a logger would understand better than anybody the Canada/US trade relationship. The softwood lumber dispute has been going on for FORTY YEARS. The logging industry has had to live with the bullying ...more

You dont have to tell me about soft wood lumber disputes with the US. Its been a hot potato for rooms full of lawyers on both sides of the border for decades and is a cash cow for them. It raises its head every few years and the lawyers clean up. No interest in seeing it end, and yes Castreau was buying Chinese junk steel and aluminum and selling it to the US as Canadian commodities He got his ...more

I don't see Trump putting a tariff on Canadian oil and gas. What I do see is him instead pressuring Saudis to increase production and using government agencies to manipulate the price lower. Trump is going to do everything he can to reduce the price of energy to stimulate the US economy and enrich the US. Meanwhile Trudeau will continue to inflict maximum damage to the Canadian economy before ...more

"He told John Deere a few weeks ago he will tariff them into non existance if they go ahead with their plans to build their equipment in Mexico for instance," That'll sure impress all the US farmers who rely on John Deere to run their operations.. as if farm equipment and parts aren't pricey enough already!!! That will gut the agriculture industry again, just like the last time ...more

We already have tariffs on all our oil and gas . They are called the Carbon Tax and the Emissions Cap . The goal is to stifle demand and use the funds to produce renewable energy. Any stifling of demand so far ?  Nope, it increases every year. Any renewables projects you can name ? Nope again because it goes to paying off other things this fiscally irresponsible government has caused.   ...more

SURE....let's talk about NORWAY !!! In Norway the oil is governed by the country, not provinces/districts like it is here. Norway produces HALF the volume that Canada produces. Oil production there commenced about twenty years after Canada/Alberta did. Early on the government of Norway decided not to fund it's government with oil royalties but invest the proceeds instead for the future ...more
