Refined Cobalt in NA?

I just saw this comment on another site... from - https://www.mining.com/canada-could-be-top-player-in-global-ev-battery-market-report/?fbclid=IwAR3pI6D-LwP6OQxWSZPTW0KaIcK1x2MxTzl4jQgWRWdKIC0LXInDszjuja4

DONALD

Is something taking Sherritt and Vale out of cobalt refining in Canada for First Cobalt to become the sole producer of refined cobalt in North America? Sherritt and Vale have been producing refined cobalt for years.
Fact checking please.

Is this true... does Sherrit and Vale produced refined cobalt in NA?

119 views and no responses... I guess I can answer my own question... lol From: https://www.carexcanada.ca/profile/cobalt/ "There are several Cobalt mining and refinery operations currently operating in Canada. Vale produced 1,362 t of refined cobalt metal at its Port Colborne refinery in Ontario in 2014.[32] Vale’s cobalt originated from company-owned nickel sulfide mines at ...more

I don't have all the answers but I did a quick google search on cobalt refining and found that like lithium, there are multiple uses of cobalt in the glass and ceramics industry, medical industry, magnets etc. Each end use has a completely different refining process. Also, cobalt refining is happening at the same time as refining other metals like nickel. What I take from this is that TM is ...more

Yes, you are correct!!! Thank you Jordsword.  First fully permited, battery grade cobalt it is... I am well invested here on First Cobalt, so just doing DD with everyone.  I have been super impressed with this company so far... https://driving.ca/features/feature-story/motor-mouth-is-canadas-automotive-industry-about-to-get-recharged

What is becoming a growing concern for me is the length of time it seems to be taking to produce anything from this "only permitted cobalt refining facility".  Did I read someplace that it will be late in 2022 before FCC is in production?  Why so long?  The ship is set to sail here and I feel we are standing at the dock waving at an old ship that wont sail.  Thoughts?

Mining operations are much more logistical (contracts, facility expansion, additional permits, transportation) etc. than setting up a coffee shop... Fall 2022 is actually fast.  Another company trying to enter this space, without the permitting in place - could take up to 5 years. Others, is this correct...

The only company I personally know of that is getting into refining Black mass in North America  is this company Li-Cycle (NYSE: PDAC). They currently produce Black Mass but the next step they plan to do is refine it to battery grade. I think on this interview they say by the end of 2022. very interesting company.  Currently they are about to be listed on the NYSE.  https://www ...more

Just to add on; beside First cobalt of course, and this other company I've mentioned, I don't know of any others in North America getting into refining black mass into battery grade. There might be more out there as everyone is trying to get exposure to the future of EV.  what makes first cobalt unique is that its focus will be cobalt sulphate and it has contracts in place with ...more
