Paid advertising by Electra. Ignore. None of that matters if they can't find money to finish the refinery. If they really were as important as they're boasting, the refinery would be operational by now. Just more propaganda from an inept and desperate management group

Isnt it just amazing how far First Cobalt has gone!  Does anyone have the number for the whistle blower hot line?

Just my perspective on this - part of the entire allure of western cobalt was both for geopolitical reasons and humanitarian. As we can see with the incoming Trump administration and the sudden political realigning of the tech CEOs, Silicon Valley only performs politics to appease whoever is in power for their own benefit. Democrats come back in, they'll suddenly flip again to supposed ...more

The problem is Electra should already be firing on all cylinders (re: refinery up and running) because currently Chima is the only place that refines cobalt into cobalt sulphate and the DRC and China provife the raw materials. Electra's Idaho mine is years from producing, but if cobalt sulfate is so important from a military persoective primarily and an EV persoective secondly, it is mind ...more

That's a good observation. And I agree, though I have to wonder if the process to make cobalt sulfate as such that existing metallurgical and manufacturing infrastructure here can quickly be repurposed - what I'm saying is, ELBM becomes replaceable.

I don't rhink it would take the Americans long to build a refinery in Idaho to support their military needs. Which makes me wonder why their DoD dished out $29M for Electra. We will soon be in an economic war with the US, so the dynamic remains to be seen. With so many battery plants being built here in Ontario Electra will have customers either way, but the lack of urgency and progress is ...more

I agree with you Starkicker.  To add to the frustration, some of the help the government has given has turned out to be no help at all.  Lole Ontario's 5 million.  Just as it started to fund they changed the terms of the grant making it only relevant to black mass and useless to moving the refinery forward.
Comment by Starkicker on Jan 14, 2025 3:07pm
Yeah, the Ontario govt only ended up providing $168k through that fund after changing the terms on the grant. Ford keeps talking about an end-to-end mineral supply chain in Ontario but so far only the downstream end has received support. Not sure why the upstream is being ignored.
