New interview

Thanks to @ordos for his summary of the interview: @ordosMy notes from the latest interview with HPQ Silicon CEO: - The "boring" R&D phase is finally completed for the fumed silica pilot plant. That's the phase where they often have to keep saying "we are getting closer" until it is finally done. While they had no doubt they will get here, this is unavoidable period ...more

How certain are we that HPQ Silicon is the leading potential process? Are there other in development processes for fumed silicon that could usurp them, produce more cheaply, or get there first?

A reply saying "DO YOUR OWN DILIGENCE" is what I needed to see to know that most of you probably haven't considered this question, nor have actually done enough research on other nanoparticle production methods. Usually when there is confidence in the community, multiple enthusiastic Sleuths are all to happy to explain the situation. I have done this for others when companies were ...more

And from @ToolmanTim: @ToolmanTimHis "rough order of magnitude" napkin math is pretty interesting (at 16:20ish) Please correct me if I don't have the math right or misunderstood anything. Just a single 1000 tonnes/year system = 1,000,000 kg/year of which you maybe have 90% efficiency... so perhaps you can sell 900,000 kg/year. Assume an average selling price of around $8 USD/kg and ...more

But the global fumed silica market today is estimated at less than USD$2 billion.  So why does Toolman use USD$8 billion?   Don't get me wrong, HPQ capturing even a couple of percent of the existing market would be big for a small company but just wondering why math is being posted and reposted as food for thought when it is based on ingredients that don't exist.  BCONT ...more

And he says 16MM tonnes for Canada and 1MM tonnes globally. Globally estimates USD$8 billion and then this global excludes Canada which would be 16 times the size or USD$128 billion.  But the entire market is less than USD$2 billion for fumed silica. To answer his question broadly, yes, he has no idea what he is talking about and the nonsense is being reposted.
