Going synthetic

GM just announced a huge long term deal with a Norwegian company named Vianode to supply it with synthetic.
This doesn't necessarily spell the end for natural, but if it becomes a trend!!!!

Synthetic graphite is significantly more expensive than natural, due to the manufacturing process which is quite energy intensive. The cost can be double to triple of natural graphite. IMO, this will drive the value of natural graphite miners higher.

W.O.  Is there an alternative available now to synthetic besides China?
Comment by WarrantOfficer on Jan 15, 2025 9:26am
Graphite not currenlty being produced in the USA. China holds 78 million metric tons of graphite in reserve and produces 77% of the worlds graphite. Silicon, carbon nanotubes, MXenes, metal oxides and halide are alternatives to graphite. WarrantOfficer, You stated "Producing alternative to synthetic and China is currently NGC, although they do not have the capacity to meet demand, it sure looks profitable for them in the future".  One doubts you mean to suggest that in future it could look profitable on a bottom line profit per share bases for NGC? Remember that the more revenue generated; the more capital ...more

When I stated they do not have capacity to meet demand, I meant demand for the entire North American market. No doubt they are in an envious position. WIth synthetic costing 2 - 3x more than natural, management should be able to turn NGC into a 100M market cap company in a timely manner. IMO, current SP is a buy.

Warrant Officer, Perhaps management should undertake specific actions which demonstrate a willingness to do as you suggested. For some graphite material processed Northern Graphite Corporation would be bringing in more revenue per specific customer; and yet, any increased income would be negatively offset due to much higher expenditures undertaken and all existing obligations relating to ...more

MaterialsMan, Should you be asking whether there is a North American and especially U.S. based champion and process manufacturer of synthetic SCPG anode component material, I wiould point your attention toward Novonix. Novonix has been locking down binding offtake purchase agreements awarded by the top automotive manufacturers and their respective battery manufacturing partners for some time now; ...more

The car companies use a blend example 55% synthetic 45% natural.. These percentages chance depending on the specs of the manufacturer.
