Just 152 days after that first phone call, Goodrich signed a contract with the RAN and the Defence Science and Technology Group for Anduril to deliver three robotic, unmanned subs the size of a bus. Anduril would design and build them in Australia – in just three years. And if they proved any good, the contract stipulated that Anduril had to be ready to go into large-scale production immediately.
“The XL-AUV will harness the latest developments in autonomy, edge computing, sensor fusion, propulsion and robotics to bring advanced capability to the Royal Australian Navy,” Palmer Luckey, Anduril’s founder, said in the statement.

The prototype shown can, the company said in a statement, “autonomously conduct missions for up to 10 days along the seafloor at up to 6,000 meters deep.” Presumably larger versions of the design will be even more capable.
