The biggest reason is likley because they don't know what's really down there until after they analyze the information from the first well. You need to know which zones are likley productive, and what types of hydrocarbons they produce. You also need to plan for flow rates and pressures in the well design, otherwise you end up getting flow rates that may not be indicative of commercial ...more

so with a strat well the formation being subjected to drilling mud over an extended time makes it difficult to produce that well. So all ur getting is info coming from the cuttings , cores and logs. In a strat well is the drilling mud alot higher to a point where they would never experienced a kick? Thx

Good question - and the science behind drilling fluid (mud) is extremely technical (regardless of how much flack mud engineers take on site). When it comes to logging, it's better to use water based fluid because any fluid that seeps into the formation will be water, however, when you are using oil based mud (OBM or invert - called that because it is an inverted emulsion with little water ...more

*sigh* Likely because this is not a production well, but a hunt for source rock.  When are you guys going to get off of the idea that they are drilling oilwells right now?  It has been stated over and over again that they are looking for formations that could house hydrocarbons, NOT drilling producing oilwells, yet people keep posting that they are mad about no flowing oil...
