CALGARY - Dozens of protesters have set up blockades at an oilsands mine that a Calgary-based company is building in Utah.
Melanie Martin of a group called Peaceful Uprising says four people were arrested as demonstrators aimed to stop equipment from moving around the site.
She says she's looked at the environmental impacts of oilsands development in Alberta and doesn't want that to happen in her home state.
Junior firm US Oil Sands (TSXV:USO) is in the process of building a $60-million project that is looking to start churning out oil later this year.
US Oil Sands CEO Cameron Todd says the protests were a minor disturbance and shouldn't affect the mine's schedule, but he's concerned about the safety risk posed by the demonstrations.
He says the activists are more interested in stopping development outright than in protecting the environment.
