Toronto & New York (the Canadian Press) - (The Canadian Press) The Toronto stock exchange closed slightly higher after a volatile day of trading in which the market had a hard time finding direction.

The S&P/TSX composite index added 10.38 points to 12,210.70 after briefly moving above 12,300 earlier in the day — its highest level since September 2008.

The market was boosted by higher oil and gold prices, while pressure on the downside came from technology and base metals stocks.

The price of gold jumped $11.90 to US$1,180.70 an ounce — its highest close in nearly five months — while oil added 98 cents to US$86.15 a barrel.

The Canadian dollar lost 1.02 cents to 98.44 cents US as security-seeking investors fled to the relative safety of the American greenback.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average slumped 158.71 points to 11,008.61 while the Nasdaq fell 50.73 points to 2,461.19.
