Word on Wall Street

“It’s encouraging that the Dow has gone above the early August high,” said Brian Lazorishak, portfolio manager and quantitative analyst at Chase Investment Counsel, in an interview with MarketWatch. “We’d like to see that confirmed by the transports, which hasn’t happened yet, but we’ll be willing to give it the benefit of the doubt here.”

TORONTO-NEW YORK (The Canadian Press) - The Toronto stock market closed with a solid advance Friday after a better than expected reading on U.S. orders for big ticket manufactured goods raised hopes of higher demand for oil and metals.

The TSX ended the week with a slight advance, up 40 points or 0.33 per cent amid gains in mining stocks and losses in the energy and financial sectors.

New York markets surged following the durable goods data with the Dow Jones industrials up 197.84 points at 10,860.26.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 54.14 points to 2,381.22 while the S&P 500 index gained 23.84 points to 1,148.67.

HSBC Holdings plc. unveiled the leadership team that will take forward HSBC's position as the world's leading international bank which has been sustained and enhanced under the leadership of Stephen Green and Michael Geoghegan. Douglas Flint will succeed Stephen Green as Group Chairman and Stuart Gulliver will be appointed Group Chief Executive, following Michael Geoghegan's decision to retire early next year.
