Canada’s main stock index closed on a triple-digit advance to a record fresh high in Thursday trading, with all sectors except telecommunications moving higher, while US markets also set records on hopes of more stimulus spending after Joe Biden’s election win was certified by Congress.

US markets roared following a literally chaotic day in Washington that saw outgoing President Donald Trump finally concede his election loss and vow to transition power smoothly to President-elect Joe Biden. Despite the turmoil, the Dow added to the previous session’s record high. Tesla rallied to an all-time high as tech stocks erased the decline of the previous session.
Also of note was Bitcoin. Investors have been turning to riskier assets even more, following the 10-year Treasury yield holding at 1% after projected wins for Democrats in both Senate runoff elections in Georgia. Bitcoin broke the $38,000 mark to hit a record high and has been up about 29% in the first days of 2021, up 380% over the past 12 months.

The Canadian dollar traded for 78.67 cents US compared with for 78.83 cents US on Wednesday.
Crude oil prices were up $0.32 to $50.95.
The price of gold was down 6.47 to $1,915.45.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 441.16 points to 27,490.13, the Hang Seng was down 143.03 points to 27,548.52, the FTSE was up 15.13 points to 6,856.96, and the DAX was up 76.69 points to 13,968.24.
