What started out promising turned negative by the end of the day. Early gains in the technology and financial sectors had helped lead Canada's main stock index higher in Wednesday trading, but mounting losses led the industrials sector, followed by energy and base metals stocks, brought the TSX to close just under the red line.
The S&P 500 and the NASDAQ opened just shy record highs but continued to move lower with the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Investors have been on edge all day awaiting potential hints from the Federal Reserve on when it would taper its massive monetary stimulus. Banks, industrial stocks, and communications companies weighed down the broader market, while health care companies made some gains.

The Canadian dollar traded for 82.15 cents US compared with 82.05 cents US on Tuesday.
Crude oil prices were down $0.18 to $71.94.
The price of gold was down 25.94 to $1,831.92.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 150.29 points to 29,291.01, the Hang Seng was down 201.69 points to 28,436.84, the FTSE was up 12.47 points to 7,184.95, and the DAX was down 18.95 points to 15,710.57.
