After ending the previous three weeks in the negative territory, Canada’s main stock index tried to dig itself out of a hole on Tuesday, only to fall farther on broad weakness, led by steep losses among the tech, industrial, and financial sectors. The loonie pulled back from its strongest level in nearly three weeks, heading lower as US bond yields moved higher, which weighed on investor sentiment.
After a series of split closes, US shares fell for a third successive day, while bond yields and measures of inflation expectations on both sides of the Atlantic soared on anxiety over when central banks might raise interest rates. The 10-year US Treasury yield hit its highest level since June 17th, 2021, pulling up euro zone bond yields in its wake. Two-year Treasury yields surged to 18-month highs.

Crude oil prices were down $0.58 to $74.87.
The price of gold was down 17.44 to $1,733.72.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 56.10 points to 30,183.96, the Hang Seng was up 291.61points to 24,500.39, the FTSE was down 35.30 points to 7,028.10, and the DAX was down 325.32 points to 15,248.56.
