Stockhouse @ the Bell: Markets Move on Economic Recovery Hopes

Hopeful news reported from Statistics Canada on Friday signalled a strong economic recovery. The agency also found that the Canadian economy posted an immense jobs gain in September, putting inflation back to pre-pandemic levels, while the unemployment rate hit an 18-month low. This helped Canada’s main stock index close just a shade higher as it crossed the finish line, as energy stocks jumped on rising oil prices. While most indices moved lower, the financial sector closed higher with energy. This was the first weekly gain in four for the TSX.

US futures had a small fall, a sign that markets have been stirred, but not completely shaken this week. This week’s earlier rebound was thanks to the near-term resolution on the US debt ceiling alongside subsiding gas prices, which took the sting out of two of the most prominent risks for investors over the last couple of weeks.
