Tracking global stocks that rose on hopes for progress in Russia-Ukraine peace talks, Canada's main stock index closed higher on Wednesday in a broad increase, even though crude oil and gold prices continued to lose steam as concerns about lockdowns in China stemming from a rise in a new COVID-19 variant emerges.
Extending strong gains from the previous session, US stocks closed on a solid note ahead of the interest rate decision from the Federal Reserve, as investors prepare for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates for the first time since late 2018. The Fed Funds Rate was raised from near zero and has been at rock bottom since the COVID-19 pandemic emerged in March 2020. In an attempt to tame inflationary pressures, The Fed is poised to continue to raise rates, with prices rising at their fastest levels in 40 years.

The Canadian dollar traded for 78.77 cents US compared with 78.02 cents US on Tuesday.
Crude oil prices were down 0.82 to $95.62.
The price of gold was down 5.32 to $1,912.55.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 415.53 points to 25,762.01, the Hang Seng was up 1,672.42 points to 20,087.50, the FTSE was up 120.34 points to 7,296.04, and the DAX was up 523.47 points to 14,440.74.
